Our Founding Principles

Commitment to Socio-Economic Change.  We are committed to pursuing economic and social change within the institutions that can block development in order to improve the quality of life for the majority of the world’s population.

Problem-Solving Orientation.  We believe that law can address the need for social change through a problem-solving approach to law-making that seeks to know, understand, and address the problematic behaviors within society and government that block development.

Commitment to Institutional Change.  We seek to encourage and facilitate long-term institutional change within the law-making process to encourage social change, poverty reduction, accountable good governance, participation and the strengthening of democracy.

Belief in Participatory Law-Making.  We believe that citizens hold key knowledge that can improve the effectiveness of law to address social problems that affect their daily lives. To that end, we seek to engage government in participatory law-making and to engage the citizenry in contributing their knowledge to laws being drafted in the interest of promoting true democracy.

Focus on Full Engagement.  We seek to engage and train all sectors involved in the law-making process including lawmakers, drafters, government officials, government staff, civil society representatives, and university faculty, recognizing the important contributions of these actors in developing effectively implementable laws.

Development of Multi-Level Capacities.  We recognize that change can come from the grassroots as from the top of government - and from the middle as well. We therefore commit to pursuing training within civil society organizations to encourage grassroots efforts at social change.

Integrated Solutions.  We believe that the people of the developing world know their countries and cultures best and the possible solutions to problems they face - we therefore seek to provide people with tools they need to use law to address these problems, in their own culturally relevant way.

Sustainable Processes.  With that in mind, we commit to working within the consortium of country nationals to assist their efforts to plan, implement and evaluate projects to institutionalize on-going, self sustaining country-based learning processes to strengthen legislative drafting capacity and law-making institutions.
